To be fair, there have been a few times when I’ve jumped into a piece of art without knowing the exact sizing first. In those case, I aim for a larger canvas than I think I’ll need. Generally, I find it easier to scale my work down when printing, than scaling it up.

This is not always the case so, again, try to figure out your ideal canvas size ahead of time before you get started.

Also, it’s important that you DON’T resize your canvas after you’ve created it. This can cause issues with quality, sizing, and overall results. So, again, decide on your canvas size from the get-go before you get started.

We have to think about DPI, which will change the size of your canvas, even if you’re still aiming for an 8×10 print at the end of the day.

Not to mention that it becomes more complicated when thinking about digitally displaying your work. How the heck do we know the size of Instagram posts?

Later in this post, we’ll talk about what you need to consider when choosing a DPI for your canvas and how it impacts its size. That said, if you couldn’t care less about how all of this works and just want a clear answer on what size canvas you should pick for your digital art, I totally get it.

Here’s a chart you can use. These dimensions are based on 300 DPI, which is generally considered to be the minimum DPI for print work. And, as we’ll talk about more in depth in the next section, choose a larger size if you’re not exactly sure what size you’ll want or need.

You’ll notice more quality loss when you scale a small image to a larger size than when you scale a large image to a smaller size. You still want to be in the ballpark, but be in the larger end of the ballpark.

Ok, another thing that’s important to understand is DPI. It’s really easy to get confused by DPI since it seems to magically balloon your canvas size. There’s a reason for it though and it doesn’t actually impact your canvas size in the way you would think.

DPI stands for dots per inch. As the name suggests, it tells you how many dots can fit into an inch of printed work (source). So, the larger the DPI, the more dots of ink will be in each inch of your printed final product.

In general, all printed work should be a minimum of 300 DPI, but you can go higher if you plan to print posters and larger pieces of work.

Personally, my reason for starting a digital archive of my artwork was two-fold. I wanted a secure way to back up my artworks with all the details about them, their exhibition history, and all related sales information and images. It wasn’t enough for me to have them in GDrive or Excel (though this is a good start). I was looking for a way to build a full picture of the history of my artwork and be able to access that information as quickly as possible without digging through thousands of folders.

The second reason turned out to be more of a comprehensive way for me to gain insights into my creative trajectory as an artist. I quickly saw how valuable it was to be able to organize my works and get a full picture of my art career from the start. I could see where certain creative evolutions took place, what types of artworks and themes sold the best, what geographical regions were the most profitable for my artwork. This information helped spark new strategic ideas for both the direction of my own art practice and the business aspect of my artwork.

Whatever the reason, it’s important to define your “why” before you begin to help act as your guiding North Star as you go through the archiving process.

If you are like most artists, you most likely have bits and pieces ofthis information all over the place. You have information on your website, at your galleries, in past publications, on your social media, and in your own records.

Art In A Pandemic: A Digital Gallery

Take a look at your CV and use the exhibition history section as a jumping-off point. Then, create a running list of works that you want to inventory. Some artists choose to work chronologically from the most recent artworks, for example, as this information is the most top of mind.

I decided to go with Artwork Archive as it was highly recommended by other artists, could capture the breadth of information I was looking to archive, was cloud-based, had neat “extras” like invoicing, a public profile option, and a range of professional pre-formatted reports–and on top of it all, it was the most affordable option.

I started with all of the works I already had digital photos of, either on a website, on my phone, or professional photos. I started with my most recent work (mainly because I was still excited about them). Made a master desktop folder of all the images I had and, honestly, the rest was pretty straightforward.

After uploading a bulk of my images, I then went back and recorded all the information like title, price, and medium alongside the image.

Adding artworks to the database is easy. All the fields I filled in for medium, for example, were “remembered” so that I can now filter, sort, and search for those works within the database. It’s an incredible way to quickly pull up very specific pieces within a large body of work without remembering the exact name of the work. Or, if I want to create a price list for a customer that is interested only in porcelain works with blue and gold patterning, for example, I could quickly pull up all of my works that fit that category and within a few clicks generate a report for them with the thumbnails of those works along with all their information and prices.

I can easily scan all the works I have in my inventory or in certain galleries or retail locations. I don’t have to scan through loads of text or spreadsheets or click in and out of a pile of folders.

Beyond documenting my artworks, I was looking for an inventory program that could build a holistic picture of my archive with a dynamic database. What I mean by that is that I wanted to be able to tie artwork records to contacts, documents, exhibitions etc. instead of living statically in a list.

I can now easily find the answers to all of these questions within a few seconds instead of fueling my insomnia with unanswered questions plaguing me.

Immersive technologies, such as Virtual Reality, have become much more affordable and accessible in the last few years. Their best well-known application may relate to enhancing gaming experiences, but they are now also emerging as a new training tool for seafarers.

Immersive technologies are generally categorised as Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) with everything in between classed as Mixed Reality (MR). VR is a completely digital world – an interactive computer-generated experience in a simulated environment. AR is where the digital world overlaps the real world. An example is ‘Pokemon Go’ where, through a smartphone, the image of the real world has digital images superimposed to make it look like real life.

For decades, trainers have faced a difficult trade-off: how can you adequately prepare learners to make good decisions when facing dangerous or extraordinary situations? You can provide simple learning materials like books and classes, but these are likely inadequate preparation for stressful and highly complex situations. Or you can expose the learners to those situations in live training, but this can be extremely costly, not to mention hazardous. For many jobs and situations, training has long offered an unappealing choice between easy but ineffective, or effective but expensive and risky.

Virtual & Augmented Reality

VR promises a third way: a method of training that can break this trade-off of learning and provide effective training in a safe, cost-effective environment applicable to both generic and situation specific training scenarios. The use of virtual and augmented realities for training is gathering pace in many sectors, but would it work for the maritime sector?

The challenge with any form of training is engagement. This is often linked to how realistic it is. If the trainee doesn’t fully engage, then there is less chance of that individual retaining much of the course content, regardless of the subject matter. However, training that uses immersive technology is proven to increase knowledge retention by up to 90 per cent. VR’s immersive experience claims to engage a participant’s auditory, visual and other senses. It mimics the real world and can safely push operational boundaries to crisis point.

· Fire training: a virtual replication of the vessel allows for various firefighting scenarios that can be modified mid-exercise to further challenge the trainee. Guest interior – areas that some crew will not be too familiar with.

VR training is also being used by some companies that do not have the resources to develop their own ship simulators. They are attracted by the flexibility of use that VR brings and how a trainer or supervisor ashore can participate in real time, providing support and feedback.

A particular application of AR is allowing crew to locate piping systems, electric cable runs and components, AV/IT equipment or other points of interest without removing deckheads, bulkhead panels or floor plates etc. This can be used extensively for familiarisation training and unplanned maintenance where systems can be quickly physically traced on the vessel. Procedures and instructions are called upon through the digital interface making fault finding safer and simpler.

Effective training that sticks is an ongoing challenge for the industry. Ship simulators have already proved effective in helping to provide realistic and engaging training, but they remain out of reach for some. The flexibility afforded by VR sets combined with the gamification of learning could prove to be a useful additional training method.

Exploration: The Path To Choosing The Solution Among Alternatives

Immersive technologies provide an experience as well as training, meaning certification goes beyond a piece of paper. With the vast majority of incidents across industry, all the personnel involved have been ‘qualified’ for the job and completed the required mandatory training for their role, but things still go wrong. Worryingly, incidents involving confined space entry is on the rise which means we need to do something different. We believe an experience-led approach is the way to go and we can do this effectively using VR and AR technologies.

These are just a few examples of how VR and AR can benefit the world of manufacturing, but throw virtual commissioning into the mix, and an entirely new world of possibilities presents itself.

A virtual reality system generates a digital version of reality, allowing designers to hold a new product in their hands before it reaches the prototype stages, or enabling engineers to operate a machine before it ever hits the factory floor.

Workshop Augmented Reality & Virtual Reality

Designers can’t observe and interact with a physical machine while they are in the process of designing it. It doesn’t exist yet, in the real world. But they can create a representation of that proposed production system in the digital realm. They can then optimize the system before they’ve physically started to build it. Virtual commissioning allows companies to verify controller logic and operation of production systems digitally instead of physically. But it can be difficult to visualize that production system in action using virtual commissioning alone. This is true particularly for more complicated pieces of equipment, and this is where VR can help.

Engineers can overlay the results of their simulations using 2D or 3D models of the production system in a VR space. This allows them to walk around the virtual manufacturing floor, and to drill down and identify flaws in the proposed production system by interacting with it in the virtual world. Companies can accelerate production system design by using VR and virtual commissioning in tandem. Analyzing data using the virtual commissioning process alone to identify certain issues could take days. Integrate VR, and it is possible to spot design flaws in just a few minutes.

The same process can be applied to an entire production line, allowing manufacturers to detect bottlenecks and other areas requiring improvement in a virtual environment. This can also improve plant safety, allowing companies to identify dangerous procedures in advance.
