It’s easy to walk into an art store, see a canvas that will fit on that empty spot of the wall and know it’s the canvas you need. But, what about digital art? The canvas looks like it’s the size of my screen, whether it’s small or large. It’s so easy to choose the wrong sizing and make a mistake. So, the question is, what’s a good canvas size for digital art?

For printed work, your digital art canvas should be the same size as your desired final print. Use an inch to pixel converter to find your dimensions in pixels. The size of your canvas designed for the web depends on the platform you plan to display it on. The DPI of your canvas should be at least 150 for web work and 300 for print work.

If you plan to print your work, it really is as simple as choosing a canvas that’s the size of your desired final product. So, if you eventually want to print an 8×10 print, make your canvas 8×10.

If I’m unsure what size I want my final print to be, I take some time and figure it out. That’s how much I care about choosing the right canvas size from the get-go.

To be fair, there have been a few times when I’ve jumped into a piece of art without knowing the exact sizing first. In those case, I aim for a larger canvas than I think I’ll need. Generally, I find it easier to scale my work down when printing, than scaling it up.

This is not always the case so, again, try to figure out your ideal canvas size ahead of time before you get started.

Also, it’s important that you DON’T resize your canvas after you’ve created it. This can cause issues with quality, sizing, and overall results. So, again, decide on your canvas size from the get-go before you get started.

Later in this post, we’ll talk about what you need to consider when choosing a DPI for your canvas and how it impacts its size. That said, if you couldn’t care less about how all of this works and just want a clear answer on what size canvas you should pick for your digital art, I totally get it.

Here’s a chart you can use. These dimensions are based on 300 DPI, which is generally considered to be the minimum DPI for print work. And, as we’ll talk about more in depth in the next section, choose a larger size if you’re not exactly sure what size you’ll want or need.

You’ll notice more quality loss when you scale a small image to a larger size than when you scale a large image to a smaller size. You still want to be in the ballpark, but be in the larger end of the ballpark.

Ok, another thing that’s important to understand is DPI. It’s really easy to get confused by DPI since it seems to magically balloon your canvas size. There’s a reason for it though and it doesn’t actually impact your canvas size in the way you would think.

DPI stands for dots per inch. As the name suggests, it tells you how many dots can fit into an inch of printed work (source). So, the larger the DPI, the more dots of ink will be in each inch of your printed final product.

In general, all printed work should be a minimum of 300 DPI, but you can go higher if you plan to print posters and larger pieces of work.

The Best Canvas Size For Instagram Digital Art And How To Create The Perfect Image

If you change your DPI after you’ve entered in your pixels, it will change your pixel number. The reason for this is because DPI (or PPI) measures your dots per inch. So, if you increase it, your canvas will need more pixels to get the job done.

As long as you know the desired size of your final product and maintain a minimum of 300 DPI, you can let your design program decide what your pixel x pixel resolution will be. As you saw in the chart above, your inch x inch size relates to a specific pixel x pixel size, so you’ll be fine as long as you know one or the other.

Pixels and inches are just two different ways to measure something. One will always translate to the other as long as the DPI remains consistent.

It’s much easier to know that you want a 8 x 10” print than a 2400 x 300 pixel canvas. As long as you have your DPI set correctly, your design program will pick the appropriate amount of pixels for the inches you need.

The reverse works as well. If you only know the pixels you need, your design program will turn it into the proper inches.

Personally, I just set my design to 300 DPI and just go with whatever number I already know. If I’m designing for the web, I use the pixels that are appropriate for a website. If I’m designing for print, I use the inches that I’ll be printing at. The rest just works itself out.

Unless you’re designing a billboard, you probably won’t have to worry about creating a canvas so big that your design program can’t handle it. That said, it’s an important thing to keep in mind, since the maximum size for a design varies from iPad to iPad.

It’s hard to say what the max canvas sizes for varying programs are because it will depend on the DPI . In general, many programs can tolerate a certain number of pixels per design. Remember that the higher your DPI, the more pixels you’ll need. This means that you’ll get fewer inches of canvas space the higher your DPI is.

It’s more likely you’ll run into this issue with an iPad or tablet program because there is only so much that these small devices can support. For example, if you’re using Procreate, you might struggle to get a 24 x 36” poster size at 300 DPI.

If you run into issues with maxing out your design program’s capacity, lower the DPI as much as you feel comfortable lowering it. While 300 DPI is recommended for print, anything above 150 DPI tends to print well. WASHINGTON — The Pentagon’s chief information officer will also serve as the head of a new organization overseeing the Defense Department’s various digital and artificial intelligence efforts, the department announced Feb. 2.

DoD Chief Information Officer John Sherman will serve as the acting chief digital and artificial intelligence officer, or CDAO, a newly created office designed to oversee the Defense Digital Service, the Joint Artificial Intelligence Center and the CIO office he was already leading. The new office was established to better align a number of data, analytics, digital solutions and AI efforts across the DoD. Previously, all three of those offices reported directly to the deputy defense secretary.

“I’m honored to be able to help get this organization stood up, again, while performing my chief information officer duties and also serving as the acting CDAO, ” Sherman said. “In addition to getting CDAO up and ready for [full operational capability], rest assured we’ll remain laser focused on our CIO duties of cybersecurity, digital modernization, C3 [command, control and communication], and other areas that the department relies on.”

Sherman has a long history working on national security and information issues. After serving a three-year stint as the chief information officer of the intelligence community, Sherman joined the DoD as the principal deputy chief information officer. Just over a year ago, he was named acting chief information officer by the incoming Biden administration.

The CDAO was established Dec. 8 and achieved initial operating capability Feb. 1, the Pentagon noted. Full operating capability is expected by June 1, and the Pentagon wants a leader selected for the position by then. Once that is accomplished, the Pentagon will submit proposals to Congress to adjust authorities and reporting lines accordingly. The department expects about 200-300 people to be combined under the new office with an approximately $500 million budget.

The Pentagon also issued a memo clarifying how the new CDAO position differs from other high-level positions within the Office of the Secretary of Defense.

For example, the undersecretary of defense for research and engineering will lead data, analytics and Al policy related to basic research through prototyping, while the CDAO will carry those efforts from prototyping to operations. The CIO will continue to lead on core infrastructure — such as cybersecurity, cloud, data transport and networks — while the CDAO will set requirements for that core infrastructure and provide policy and guidance for the data, analytics and AI that interact with it.

Attackers are building toolsets and bots that use AI and ML techniques to evade detection and blocking the methods already in place within most organizations. Many of these tools (typically open source) can be easily obtained from the Internet.  This gives anyone the ability to run the tools against target organizations.

In an article in Wired President Obama expressed his concerns about AI-enabled bots attacking nuclear weapon silos and causing a launch. This intimates that the threat of AI and ML enhanced attacks are a major concern even at the highest level of government.

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Defense Department is creating a new position to oversee its digital and artificial intelligence activities, with the hope the office will be able to drive faster progress in those areas and meet threats posed by China, according to a senior defense official.

The new chief digital and artificial intelligence officer, or CDAO, will directly report to the deputy defense secretary and oversee the Joint Artificial Intelligence Center, the Defense Digital Service and the DoD’s chief data officer, according to a memo released Dec. 8. Today, those offices directly report to the deputy defense secretary, something the senior defense official said has led to disjointedness.

“We’ve created the CDO, the JAIC and DDS each operating independently and as if the other ones don’t exist, ” said the officer, who briefed media Dec. 8 on the condition of anonymity. “That causes two kinds of inefficiencies. One, it means we don’t have the kind of integration across their lines of effort that we could really maximize the impact of the things that any one organization is doing. Two, it means we don’t take advantage of when there are overlaps in what they’re doing, or underlaps in what they are doing to drive the right kind of prioritization in these spaces.”

The official insisted this new position is not meant to create more bureaucracy, but rather serve as an integration function to better drive priorities across these related functional areas.

It is unclear who will lead this organization, but the senior official said the department is looking both inside and outside the Pentagon. The intent is to establish an initial operating capability for the office by Feb. 1, 2022, and reach full operating capability no later than June 1, 2022, the official said.

After establishing an initial operating capability, the office will work with existing authorities to integrate and align the three offices it will oversee. The CDAO will serve as the successor organization to the JAIC, the official said, meaning it will be the lead AI organization within the Pentagon. The CDAO will act as an intervening supervisor for DDS, working to scale new digital solutions and apply them to other problems.

After reaching full operating capability, the official said, the DoD will submit legislative proposals to Congress to adjust authorities and reporting lines.

The senior official noted that this new organizational change gets to the heart of the Pentagon’s Joint All-Domain Command and Control approach, which seeks to more seamlessly connect sensor information to shooters to allow for faster decision-making.

JADC2 is the integration of disparate data sources into a common architecture that allows us to have clear, senior-leader-down-to-operator decisions to drive warfighting improvements, ” the official said. “To do that. you need a range of capabilities from common data architecture to a common development and deployment environment that allows you to take your applications either digital or AI-enabled and move them to the warfighter.”

Moreover, the hope is that the new CDAO position will accelerate progress on initiatives such as common data fabrics, open architectures and open APIs — all key enablers of JADC2.

The position is expected to help the DoD identify solutions to fit these problems and build toward common foundational elements, common development environments and common deployment environments.

Katrina Alvarez-Jarratt: We shot the hero film over several days in Rotorua [a city on New Zealand's North Island] using a variety of rigs: drones, chest mounts, GoPros and normal cameras. We were trying to create the same look and camera positions that you see in role-playing games … to create the illusion that the gamer is controlling the camera angle. All the action footage was shot using GoPro cameras to give it that almost fisheye quality you get in gameplay.

We shot the gamer separately, and this happened some time after shooting the footage. So, for a long time we had our game, but no gamer to play it, which made for some tricky edits trying to figure out how long to give to certain scenes.

Alvarez-Jarratt: Loserfruit came on board because her audience [of nearly 3 million] was right for us. She's an Aussie gamer and she'd actually been to New Zealand and loved traveling there, so she was the perfect streamer/gamer for us. The trick with her was not scripting too much of what she said. We wanted it to feel as authentic as possible. We also wanted a level of interaction between our narrator, actor Julian Dennison, and Loserfruit's rolling stream of consciousness as she "played." In the end, we gave her points to hit and our director was on site to work with her as she filmed.

Alvarez-Jarratt: Isolation was one of the huge difficulties of the project. It was brought to life during Covid lockdowns—managing people across time zones in New Zealand and Australia, with everyone working remotely. That really put the team and their WFH setups through their paces.
